Reflections on the Researcher's Stance in Intercultural Research Contexts
Challenges and Strategies for the Co-construction of Knowledge

This article analyzes the researcher’s stance in qualitative research conducted in intercultural contexts. The reflections are based on the authors' experiences with studies conducted in Brazil and Canada. The article begins with a review of the literature on the main methodological challenges faced in research conducted in intercultural settings. It then explores Ethnopsychiatry as an ethical, theoretical, and methodological framework, particularly focusing on the concepts of complementarity, and countertransference. Drawing on the challenges encountered by the authors, the article proposes strategies for adapting qualitative research to intercultural contexts. The analysis emphasizes the importance of sensitive listening, the co-construction of knowledge, and addressing power asymmetries. In addition, the article discusses language adaptations, the use of field journals, and the walking interview method. This contribution aims to broaden the debate on methodologically sensitive practices that are committed to the complexity of knowledge construction in intercultural contexts within the field of human and social sciences.
